S&P 500 stocks: 208 companies analyzed

The 208 S&P 500 companies Fintols covers, with dated P/E, growth, margin and dividend figures and a plain-English analysis of each.

The S&P 500 is the most widely followed stock index in the world, tracking roughly 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States. It’s maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices and is widely treated as the best single gauge of the U.S. stock market. It actually holds a few more than 500 stocks because some companies have more than one class of shares. Many members sell globally, so the index also reflects the wider world economy. Changes to the lineup are announced regularly as companies grow, shrink, merge or get acquired.

Membership isn’t automatic. A committee picks the companies, requiring a U.S. domicile, a minimum size, adequate trading liquidity, a sufficient public float and positive recent earnings. The index is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, meaning only shares that actually trade count, so the biggest companies carry far more weight than the smallest ones. Technology, financials, health care and consumer-oriented businesses currently make up the largest slices of the index.

Most beginners get exposure through low-cost index funds or ETFs that track it, which spread a single purchase across hundreds of companies at once. It’s worth knowing that, because of the market-cap weighting, a handful of giant companies drive a large share of the index’s moves. For most people, it works best as a long-term holding, with regular contributions over time rather than attempts to time the market’s ups and downs. Fees and tracking quality matter more than flashy marketing.

With data as of November 4, 2026, of the 208 S&P 500 companies Fintols covers, the largest by market value is Apple ($5.08 trillion), the fastest-growing in its latest quarter is Micron (+379.3% in sales) and the highest dividend yield belongs to General Mills (7.16%). The typical company in the group trades on a P/E of 23.4x and keeps a net margin of 15.2% (medians). Figures come from Yahoo Finance, the same source the Fintols analysis uses; N/A means the figure is not available.
