Industrial stocks: 20 companies analyzed
The 20 industrials companies Fintols covers, such as Caterpillar, John Deere and Emerson: P/E, growth, margin and dividend with dated figures.
Industrials is a broad bucket: makers of machinery, factory automation, electrical equipment, engines, heating and cooling systems and tools, plus freight railroads, trucking and parcel delivery companies, and industrial distributors. They earn money selling equipment to other businesses and, more and more, from maintenance services, spare parts and software tied to that equipment, which tends to be steadier. Transportation companies get paid for every shipment or ton they move. Many operate worldwide and sell to very different end markets, from construction to energy and healthcare.
Because customers are other businesses, demand follows the capital spending cycle, so watch the order backlog and the book-to-bill ratio, which hints at what lies ahead. Operating margin and its trend show whether the company can push through price increases. Check how much revenue comes from services and aftermarket parts, which are usually more profitable and recurring. For railroads and truckers, the operating ratio and volumes are key. Return on invested capital tells you whether investments actually create value.
The main risks are industrial recessions, higher raw material and energy costs, tariffs, supply chain disruptions and, in transportation, competition and labor disputes. If you’re starting out, remember that these companies often look cheap at the top of the cycle and expensive at the bottom. Try to think about normal earnings over several years rather than judging the business by a single quarter. Also pay attention to how well management allocates capital, especially when it comes to acquisitions.
With data as of November 4, 2026, of the 20 industrials companies Fintols covers, the largest by market value is Caterpillar ($271.8 billion) among those quoted in dollars and Siemens (€210.7 billion) among those quoted in euros, the fastest-growing in its latest quarter is Eaton (+28.0% in sales) and the highest dividend yield belongs to UPS (6.01%). The typical company in the group trades on a P/E of 27.3x and keeps a net margin of 13.0% (medians).
