S&P 100 stocks: 102 companies analyzed
The 102 S&P 100 companies Fintols covers, with dated P/E, growth, margin and dividend figures and a plain-English analysis of each.
The S&P 100 is a subset of the S&P 500 made up of about one hundred of the largest and most established U.S. companies. It’s also run by S&P Dow Jones Indices and grew up alongside the options market: its members must have listed options, and options on the index itself have traded for a long time. Like the S&P 500, it can include more than one share class of the same company, so the number of stocks can slightly exceed one hundred.
The same index committee picks the members, drawing from S&P 500 companies that have listed options and weighing size, liquidity and sector balance so that the index mirrors the makeup of the broader market. It’s weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, so the biggest companies drive most of its moves. Since it holds only giants, technology, communication services and the largest financial, health care and consumer companies stand out even more than they do in the S&P 500.
It’s a more concentrated index than its bigger sibling: fewer companies and more weight in the largest ones, so it tends to move much like the S&P 500 but with less diversification. A few ETFs track it, although there are fewer choices than for the S&P 500. If you’re starting out, it’s a handy lens for seeing how America’s megacaps behave, and for comparing concentration against broader benchmarks before choosing how to invest.
